چکیده

An analog VLSI circuit used to model spectral shape analysis in the central auditory system is presented. Like the receptive fields of visual cortical neurons, the spectral response fields (SRFs) of neurons in the mammalian primary auditory cortex (AI) resemble localized sinusoids of various phases (i.e., symmetry) and scale (i.e., spectral bandwidth). We use a single circuit building block to model the various response fields. A continuum of asymmetries and bandwidths are obtained by adjusting several offchip parameters. The circuit is to be used for analysis of the auditory spectrum at the output of a silicon cochlea. This scheme is thought to be suitable for the implementation of learning and adaptation in speech recognition and similar applications.

A Neuromorphic Approach to the Analysis of Monaural and Binaural Auditory Signals

A neuromorphic approach to the analysis of monaural and binaural auditory signals is presented. Several aspects of the mammalian auditory system, including the cochlea, are modeled and then applied to engineering problems such as auditory feature extraction and source localization. In the case of auditory feature extraction, the spectral response fields of primary auditory cortical neurons are ...

Analog VLSI model of binaural hearing - Neural Networks, IEEE Transactions on

The stereausis model of biological auditory processing was proposed as a representation that encodes both binaural and spectral information in a unified framework. We describe a working analog VLSI chip that implements this model of early auditory processing in the brain. The chip is a 100 000-transistor integrated circuit that computes the stereausis representation in real time, using continuo...

A Silicon Model of an Auditory Neural Representation of Spectral Shape

The paper describes an analog integrated circuit that implements an auditory neural representation of spectral shape. The circuit contains silicon models of the cochlea, inner hair cells, spiral ganglion cells, and the neurons that compute an amplitude-invariant representation of spectral shape. The chip uses the temporal information in each silicon auditory-nerve fiber to compute this final re...

An analog VLSI architecture for auditory based feature extraction

We have developed a low power analog VLSI chip for real time signal processing motivated by the principles of human auditory system. A analog cochlear lter-bank (which is implemented on the chip) decomposes the input audio signal into several frequency bands that have almost equal bandwidth on a log scale. This step is thus similar to computing the wavelet transform. The chip then computes sign...

An Auditory Localization and Coordinate Transform Chip

The localization and orientation to various novel or interesting events in the environment is a critical sensorimotor ability in all animals, predator or prey. In mammals, the superior colliculus (SC) plays a major role in this behavior, the deeper layers exhibiting topographically mapped responses to visual, auditory, and somatosensory stimuli. Sensory information arriving from different modal...
